The annual PSA conference will be in Glasgow this year (April 10th to 12th). We would like there to be a strong British and Comparative Political Economy Specialist Group presence. With this in mind, we are keen to solicit panel proposals for the conference. These can engage broadly with themes relevant to British and Comparative Political Economy- the conference theme is ‘politics in interesting times’.

In particular, it would be very appropriate to have a panel engaging with the political economy of Brexit. Submissions on this theme are particularly welcome. We will likely have an allocation of up to four panels in total. Do please feel free to organise panel proposals and papers and then pitch them to us.

To get the ball rolling, please see the attached panel proposal on ‘British capitalism in interesting times’. We already have one confirmed paper for this (Jeremy Green and Scott Lavery) and would like to invite more.

Panel Proposal:

The recent vote for Brexit confirmed that British capitalism is still undergoing a profound adjustment in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis of 2007/8. The post-crisis period in Britain and abroad has witnessed the emergence of a number of important new dynamics in spheres ranging from monetary policy to labour markets. Alongside structural transformations, the climate of ideas has begun to shift, with reigning political and economic orthodoxies increasingly called into question. But these transformations are balanced by familiar continuities. This panel seeks to identify important thematic trends, as well as points of continuity and discontinuity, within the post-crisis phase of British capitalism. Setting British capitalism in a wider comparative and international context, the panel will engage with a number of questions. Is there still a ‘British’ model of capitalism in the post-crisis period? How and why might Britain’s post-crisis trajectory have deviated from European and global trends? Do the insights of Comparative Political Economy literature apply in the post-crisis conjuncture?

Deadline:

The deadline for panel and paper proposal submission to the PSA is October 24th. If we could please ask that panels are proposed to us by no later than October 17th.
